Hypnosis dates back as far as any recorded manuscript will go. It is known, for example, that ancient Egyptians used forms of hypnosis. It has been used for many years for many functions and is one of the most highly controversial and misunderstood subjects by far. It is only in the modern day of understanding the actual workings of the human brain and the functions of the left and right hemisphere that hypnosis is being standardised into a real technology. It is generally believed that the modern form of psycho-technology will greatly replace the near useless mumbo-jumbo beliefs of hypnosis. Hypnosis is used for many medical treatments and therapeautic uses such as a form of anaesthetic, with many successful operations being completed without any form of drug being utilised. There have been reports of women going into labour, utilising a state of trance, delivering a baby completely pain free. More recently hypnotherapy has been used to help people stop smoking (recommended by the NHS as the only successful way to stop) or over consuming food. In basic terms, the process of hypnosis, involves working with the sub-conscious. Essentially all that means, is the processes of the mind that have become so habituated that they are automatic, so that you dont think about them anymore. Conscious thought is reserved for just that - thinking. Subconscious processes are simply those things we do on auto-pilot like driving, smoking, eating etc. Every day we make decisions; some good, some bad, all of them are influenced by the sub-conscious. Many of us have tried to change the direction of our lives with ‘will’ power, only to find that for some reason this fails. ‘Will’ power could be known as the conscious. Consciousness is the rational logical thought processes of having to think things through rather than them being automatic. We consciously make decisions that we will not smoke today, or today we will not over-eat. If the sub-conscious and the conscious are constantly fighting these 'in built' programs, you are immediately setting yourself up for failure. Hypnosis, in layman’s terms, helps to change what you are thinking sub-consciously (automatically) to improve the functionality of the conscious.
