Of all of the things that hold us back, none are more dream shattering
than fears and phobias. Imagine how much you could have achieved so far
in your lifetime had you not been afraid. Of course some fears are beneficial,
such as a fear of putting you hand into a fire, of having a phobia of
driving like a maniac on the motorway. Many fears however are not needed
(even as much as you would believe that they are), and by expelling those
that are preventing you from gaining what you want you can open many more
doors to your life.
Eliminating you fears and phobias can be one of the most empowering changes
you can make in your life. Outlined below is a brief description and outlined
method of various techniques that can be used to expel what is currently
holding you back.
The Decision Destroyer
This form of therapy is designed for use with the timeline therapy outlined
in the previous chapter (chapter 6).
The decision destroyer first asks you to focus upon a positive powerful
experience from the past, an imprint experience which affects your behaviour,
taking notice of all the sub-modalities. Now complete the same for a ‘Negative
imprint’. Now consider what could have happened before that experience
that could have changed the outcome. Imagine a prior behaviour that would
have helped you overcome this experience and make a positive imprint of
this behaviour, using your powerful sub-modalities. With this positive
experience travel back until you stop just before the negative experience,
and experience it again, now with your new positive imprint resource.
Once experienced continue travelling back along to your present self,
observing all the things that will have changed with this new resource.
This should have helped change the negative experience into an empowering
one.
Visualisation
Visualisation was initially outlined in chapter five, as a result should
any difficulties be experienced whilst practicing this section, referring
back would be highly beneficial.
Technique to eliminate fears or phobias:
• With your eyes open or closed imagine yourself in front of a large
cinema screen, seeing on the screen a snapshot of yourself in black and
white.
• Now feel yourself float out of your body into the projection booth,
watching yourself sitting in the cinema, looking at that black and white
snapshot.
• Now from your ‘safe’ position watch the movie of a
younger you going through a phobia triggering situation, ending the movie
with a freeze frame shot of yourself.
• Now, transport your self back to your body and in less than 2
seconds run, in full colour, the movie back to the start, before the incident
occurred. See, hear and feel everything you felt as you rapidly relive
this traumatic experience from the moment it was over to before it began.
• Run the phobic state in any way you can. Have fun, remembering
you are the director with the power if you wish to turn people into cartoon
characters, with full control over what/how the music is played.
• By using this technique you start to understand your fear and
learn your bodies’ reasons for these responses.
• Now by changing these sub-modalities you can begin to expel your
fear, changing your own bodies’ reaction to the stimuli.
Swish Pattern A swish pattern relies on changing the sub-modalities of an experience
to create a lasting change. It is useful for expelling any unwanted feelings.
The swish pattern:
• Identify the behaviour that you wish to change.
• Identify a trigger for this behaviour.
• Make an image of this behaviour as you experience it and make
at least two visual sub-modalities. Having done this, break state.
• Focus your mind on how you would like to be. Construct an attractive
image of the ideal you ensuring you are disassociated.
• Live in this situation, enjoy it, and then shrink it down to a
small sparkling dot. Break state.
• Now. Imagine a large movie screen. You are watching yourself doing
the unwanted behaviour, the sparkling dot of the new you is hovering somewhere
mid-screen. As you start to watch the movie the sparkling dot begins to
rapidly grow until WHOOSH! The brand new you explodes onto the screen,
obliterating the old you! Repeat this image several times making it faster
and faster each time.
Change Personal History Technique The technique used to overcome the effects of past experience
is called the ‘change personal history programme’. Useful
for expelling negative beliefs that are holding you from achieving, the
technique is as follows.
The ‘change personal history’ technique:
• Firstly, identify the negative state, summon it, anchor and then
break that state.
• Holding that negative anchor, ask the person to go back to a time
when he/she experienced similar feelings, doing this until you reach the
earliest memory of his state. Release the anchor, break state and allow
the person to return to the present.
• Find out what resource the client would have needed in the past
to avoid suffering that negative experience.
• Elicit an anchor to the named state (confidence for example).
• Holding this new anchor, ask the client to step back into that
earlier experience. Have them watching it as if it was a movie of the
event, watching themselves exhibiting the new behaviour (dissociation).
Have them observe how the events unfold differently now they have this
new behaviour.
• Now have them associate this experience with the resourceful state.
This time the event has a new outcome. Ask them the sub-modalities of
this new experience.
• Finally, break state and remove the anchor. Test the experience
again without using the anchor. Hopefully the memories of this experience
will have changed.
• It the negative thoughts still persist, stack the additional resource
until a satisfactory result is achieved.
The techniques above are extremely useful not only for motivation, but
also expelling any fears or phobias that you may be carrying. As with
all of the techniques that have been outlined in this book, practice makes
perfect. The use of a qualified specialist is also recommended to aid
you, and enhance your results. Chapter Eight is the final chapter of this
series. It will help you to understand how to use the skill you have learned
in the outside world, and how to influence those around you to get yourself
ahead.
