When you stop to ponder the limitless potential that we – as human
beings – have you can’t help but wonder what truly is capable
of the individual. Look around you; there are people just like yourself
everywhere, each achieving different but equally magnificent things. Many
people however find they slip too easily into the mainstream of life’s
current, usually settling for less than they have dreamed. Why do so many
of us settle for second best when the obstacles that lie in our way can
easily be removed?
What is it that you truly want from your life? Do you even know? Over
the course of this book we are going to take a journey; a journey of self
discovery. In the following chapters you will learn techniques to not
only discover your goals but actually learn the technologies that will
aid you in achieving them.
This book has been written to help you. The following chapters are designed
not only to teach you the principles behind the technologies but also
aid you in utilising them to their fullest potential. At the end of each
chapter is a task sheet; a list of tasks to be completed over a weekly
basis. You will find that by spending a week completing each chapter to
its fullest potential that your comprehension and use of the technologies
will increase dramatically.
In this chapter we are going to take a look at the foundation and discover
the key principles of NLP.
Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) is probably one of the most useful
technologies you can learn to get the most out of your life. How can it
do this? Let us briefly study the name.
Neuro; this relates to our neurology and thinking processes
Linguistic; relating to language and how we can utilise our communications
Programming; relating to a metaphor to how we would program our brain
to respond how we wish.
Essentially, NLP could be described as the ultimate software for the brain.
Just as a computer program can improve the efficiency of your computer
NLP is designed to increase how efficiently you can utilise you brain
to improve outcomes.
NLP was designed in the 1970’s by co-founders; information scientist
Richard Bandler and linguistics professor John Grinder. Their aim was
to discover what made such therapists as Milton Erickson – the famous
hypnotherapists and Fritz Perls – the father of Gestalt therapy
so successful, and to take the most practical and powerful elements of
these theories to design a single ‘ultimate’ therapy. There
discovery is now known as modelling.
Modelling
So modelling was to be the first phase/discovery in NLP. New techniques
and principles have been branched in the years since NLP was born; this
is where our journey begins.
Initially and possibly understandably NLP was first condemned. The concept
was simple; possibly too simple. If you want to achieve something in your
life then you should go out and find somebody who has achieved what you
want. From here take note of what they are doing, how are they doing it?
Look at the body language, how they communicate with those around them
verbally and non-verbally; take these principles including the beliefs
of the desired result and apply them to your own life. Why reinvent the
wheel if you want to achieve something when there are more efficient methods?
Simple!
This technology seems simple; I can almost hear you telling yourself that
if it was that simple then everyone would be doing it. I agree; modelling
however can be more difficult then most could imagine if you have trouble
understanding how to model the best in people. Throughout this book you
will be given pointers to aid and improve your skills.
Before we can begin modelling however we must first know what it is that
we really do desire from our lives. The following section is designed
to help you understand and realise where you believe your life needs to
be improved. Take as much time as you need to complete the following exercise.
1. What do you currently have in your life that you like/enjoy?
This could include answers such as friends, work or family. Remember;
make all of your answers as in depth as possible, listing names and different
specific aspects that you like. Eg. My family love me.
2. What do you Not have in your life that you believe you
would like?
The answers here could be totally different to those above. They may however
be the same answers with different aspects Eg. I want my family to understand
me. Remember; there are no boundaries or dreams too small. If somebody
else can achieve something then so can you.
3. What do you have in your life that you do Not like?
Remember; the more in depth you are with you answers the closer you will
be to knowing yourself. Do not put a time limit on this exercise.
4. What do you Not have in your life that you do Not want?
Sound like an odd question but it will allow you to have more direction
and help you avoid future pain.
Which of these lists is the longest? By using this exercise do you believe
that you are currently in a place that you truly desire to be in? Do you
now understand more what you want from your life? Do you understand which
areas you could change, even if a small change, to dramatically improve
how you feel? What would happen in your life if even one aspect of the
most important list to you was to change?
This may have seemed like a waste of time to some of you, you probably
would be surprised to know that most of us don’t really know what
we really want. It really is not that surprising however when you look
at the world around you. Take a minute to look around at your current
surroundings. Whether you are at home, in the office or a public place,
I will guarantee that there is a least one piece of clothing or equipment
or even a friend/colleague selling something. It can be hard to know what
will honestly make you happier when even your best friends are telling/selling
you different!
For example, think of a person you admire: this will most likely be a
friend as we tend to associate with those we admire to boost our perceptions
of ourselves. What is it about that person that you like? Are they funny,
clever or possibly good looking or healthy? Do you find that you want
different things around different people? You should do… if that
person is selling themselves correctly (and they will be if you are finding
their qualities attractive enough to consider them as your friends). Do
you have a friend who is so good looking and healthy that every time you
are near them you feel the desire to become healthier or to lose weight?
Do you have a colleague who is so smart that he inspires you to read or
study more?
These may be the people that you want to model. Find inspiration. Discover
what will drive you. Read on to discover more.
We are in contact with our world through our five senses: Sight, touch,
sound, smell and taste. Our Neurology takes external stimuli and represents
them to us with a matching set of internal representations. These form
our subjective experiences and perceptions.
We all perceive our world differently utilising our senses. Some of us
may predominantly ‘see’ the world; others may ‘feel’
the world. More information on ‘representation systems are in chapter
three.
Ten billion or more brain cells arrange themselves into groups in order
to form ‘maps’ that respond to our experience. Our perception
of the world differs to everyone else’. For example: some may say
the glass is half full whereas others may perceive a glass as half empty.
NLP helps us to identify and utilise the patterns and resources that others
utilise to reach higher levels of performance and success. By understanding
how to act in certain situations we can begin to exert greater control
in commanding our future. NLP teaches you how to communicate with yourself
and others in order to empower you skills.
It is also estimated that 93% of all communication is Non-Verbal. How
you say what you say (tonality, volume, and speed) carries more power
than the actual words you say. Eye movements, facial expressions and body
gestures all carry important keys in communication. With this ‘total
communication’ we can learn how we communicate not only with each
other but with ourselves. This is the first stage in modelling. By mastering
how to utilise these techniques and learning how to perceive the world
like those whom we admire we can make dramatic changes in our own lives
instantly.
Over the next few days you are going to observe people; in particular
a person you admire. How do they communicate? How do they perceive their
world? What words do they use to describe things? What are their beliefs?
You will begin to take note of how they are different to you and realise
that by utilising the ‘best’ of their perceptions and beliefs
that you can easily achieve what they can.
As you begin to read the next chapter you will start to learn more about
beliefs and perceptions, and your skills of observation will improve.
