Henry Ford once coined the phrase,
‘whether you believe you can or you can’t: you’re right.’
In terms of NLP, he couldn’t have been more right. Our beliefs and
perceptions essentially outline who we are. Who would Mohammed Ali have
been without his outlook on the world? He certainly wouldn’t have
been the inspiration that he is perceived as by many today had he not
thought that he was the best boxer in the world.
In this article you are going to learn how our beliefs and perceptions
of those beliefs can work for and against us.
How many millionaires do you personally know? How do you think that these
people became millionaires? Ok, some of them may have inherited a large
fortune, but think about those who have earned their millions. Did they
have any doubt that one day they would be financially secure? Possibly;
it is almost guaranteed however that they had strong beliefs that they
could do what they desired. Do you believe you have what it takes to become
financially secure? Could you earn a million? Of course you could; you
and I both know that we all have the potential to achieve whatever! Then
if this is true, how come you are not yet a millionaire? The same could
be said for being fit and healthy or clever. You believe you could be
all these things; you may also believe that there are things holding you
back and stopping you from achieving your dreams. I will almost guarantee
that the beliefs that are holding you back are stronger than those that
are pushing you forwards. What is the main difference between you and
those who have what you want? Perceptions of Beliefs.
We all know that we have what it takes or the potential to become rich.
We can all say, ‘if I wanted to be rich I could be.’ How many
of us actually believe these statements though? Look deep down inside
and say to yourself,’ I can be a millionaire’. Do you really
believe it? Or do you stutter and instantly think of reasons why you couldn’t
be a millionaire? Do you perceive your beliefs as truth or lie?
Above I utilised the millionaire belief because to so many of us it seems
unrealistic, but this works for every field in your life. How come you
can’t lose weight? Do you really believe you can? You may find that
if you are telling yourself ‘no’ deep down, you are self sabotaging
yourself from ever losing weight.
One of the easiest ways to change your current outcomes is to change your
beliefs and the perceptions of them. Modelling outlined in chapter one
will also become useful here.
So how do you change a belief? How long does it take? It takes the same
amount of time to change a belief as it does to make a decision. When
you decide that a belief is true there is no way you could ever believe
any different. So how long does it take to make a decision? A few days
perhaps? Hours or minutes?
A true decision is made in a second. It may take you time to weigh up
the pros and cons of making that decision, but the very second a true
decision is made you expel all possibility of that decision failing. For
example; if you are a smoker. You believe you are a smoker. Even when
you try to stop smoking, deep down you will truly believe that you are
still a smoker unless you make a decision that you are not. I’ve
heard hundreds of time people tell me that they are a social smoker. What
is a social smoker? Is it not just somebody who deep down knows that they
are still a smoker and not willing to make a decision to actually quit?
That’s great if that what you want to be, but if you really wanted
to stop smoking you would have to decide that you are not even a social
smoker, so that even when you walk into a social place you know that ‘you
do not smoke’. Only when you truly believe this can results be achieved.
The same goes for making money and losing weight.
How do you perceive yourself?
Be brutally honest, are you still a smoker? Are you ever going to lose
weight? Will you ever really make the amount of money you need?
How are these perceptions going to affect your life in three months time?
How are these perceptions going to affect your life in a year’s
time? Or even five years time?
Are you willing to live with the consequences if these things do not
change?
What will your life be like once these things have changed?
What will you see’ hear and feel?
Are you willing to make a change?
What beliefs are currently stopping you from making that change?
When are you going to make the decision to stop these beliefs from having
a negative impact upon what you desire?
Tomorrow? Today? Now?
You should now have a greater understanding of how your life could be
changed if you wanted it to. You should also understand what it is that
you desire and how you life will be different once these changes have
been made. Perceptions and beliefs hold a strong key in NLP. Should you
want to aid anybody in making a change to their lives please utilise this
chapter to aid them in first understanding what they want.
We would also advise using these points of desire for individual motivation.
Even when you feel motivation is low you can easily reassess why you have
made a decision.
